Ear surgery
Plastic surgeryDo you have ‘protruding’ ears, asymmetrical ears or ears that are too large? Otoplasty corrects cosmetic imperfections and medical conditions affecting the outer ear.
Also known as auricoplasty, this cosmetic surgery procedure is suitable for people of all ages and can be performed on both ears or just one (unilateral otoplasty).
There are many possible objectives for ear plastic surgery, such as reducing the prominence of protruding ears (prominent ears), correcting congenital deformities or those resulting from trauma, and improving symmetry between the two ears.
But the benefits do not stop there: often, aesthetic imperfections or malformations of the ear cause embarrassment, affecting the patient’s social relationships, whether they are a child or an adult. Otoplasty, through a simple and minimally invasive correction, allows for a radical change in the appearance of the face, making it more harmonious, with clear psycho-social benefits.

The post-operative period is generally well tolerated. After the operation, it is normal to wear a compression bandage for a few days or weeks, which helps to keep the ears in the correct position and reduce swelling. You can resume light daily activities after around 5–7 days, whilst strenuous physical activity is not recommended for at least 2–3 weeks.
The scars from otoplasty are generally barely visible. The surgeon makes the incisions behind the ear, in the natural crease, so that the scars are hidden. Over time, they tend to become less noticeable and fade.
During the procedure, which is usually carried out under local or general anaesthetic, you will not feel any pain. After the operation, you may experience mild discomfort or a feeling of tightness in your ears, which can be easily managed with painkillers prescribed by your doctor.
The results of ear plastic surgery are visible immediately after the dressings are removed, although the ears may appear swollen. The final results become apparent after around 2–3 months, once the swelling has completely subsided and the tissues have healed.
Yes, the results of otoplasty are generally permanent. Once the position or shape of the ears has been corrected, there is usually no need for further surgery.
