Chondrolaringoplasty

Plastic surgery

Chondrolaringoplasty, commonly known as Adam’s apple reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size, shape or angle of the thyroid cartilage, which acts as a ‘shield’ for the windpipe and is usually more prominent in men.

The cost of chondrolaringoplasty varies depending on a number of factors, including the complexity of the procedure. Our clinic offers a package that includes pre-operative consultations, anaesthesia and hospital fees. Contact our advisors to receive a quote and a no-obligation consultation straight away.

During the procedure, the patient is usually given a local anaesthetic with sedation or a general anaesthetic, so no pain is felt during the procedure. After the operation, there may be some mild pain or discomfort in the treated area, but this is usually managed with painkillers prescribed by the surgeon. Most patients report minimal pain.

Although chondrolaringoplasty is generally considered safe, like all surgical procedures it carries certain risks. There is a potential risk to the voice as the thyroid cartilage is close to the vocal cords. However, an experienced surgeon performs the procedure with extreme care to avoid damaging the vocal cords. Any temporary changes, such as hoarseness or a slight change in tone, usually resolve spontaneously within a few weeks.

Recovery following chondrolaringoplasty is generally quick and painless compared to other cosmetic procedures, but certain precautions are required. Swelling and slight bruising in the neck area are normal and tend to subside within 1–2 weeks. The incision scars are usually small and well concealed within the natural creases of the neck. In many cases, once healed, they are barely visible.

It is recommended to avoid speaking or straining your voice in the days following the procedure to reduce the risk of vocal changes. You can resume light activities within a few days, whilst strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.
